Why your internal newsletter isn't hitting the mark

You want to get business information to your employees, and that is an absolute necessity in keeping your people happy.

But they still don't seem to know much about what is going on in within the business.

Newsletters for your internal communications are pretty standard way of talking to employees in bulk, but is yours actually effective? Is it being read, or even looked at? Unfortunately we can't all be reporting on the where abouts of "You Know Who"!

So what do most newsletters look like?

Usually text heavy, with a bit too much clip art and printed or popped into employees inboxes. Let's be honest, no one wants to read that. And when you do find someone willing to attempt to read it, it's filled with too many figures and acronyms that no one really knows what you're trying to say.

So how do you get a newsletter to hit the mark and actually be read by your employees?

1. Ditch the clip art and go for a simple readable design. You don't have to use every font available to you. Stick with some simple branding and a more magazine/newspaper layout to make reading easier.

2. Add real photos. Your employees want to feel included so include photos of them. What they've been doing and their projects.

3. Use graphics. If you want to get your stats noticed, turn them into an interesting and understandable graphic.


4. Make it worth their while. You need to give them an incentive to read your newsletter, especially if it is a bit wordy. Run a competition. Even if the prize is something small, you're more likely to get your points read.


5. Make it inclusive. Ask your employees to contribute. Maybe they have ideas of things they'd like to read, or even write a piece themselves.


6. Ensure the format fits the audience. Guys on the road, or with limited online access aren't going to want an email. They want physical items to read. Let them take it in their vans to read in their lunch break. Employees in the office can be emailed, but beware that they have other emails too so might move yours to the back of the queue. Time it right.
