Corporate Social Responsibility is on every large businesses radar at the moment, and it should be on every small businesses too.
Huge corporations have dedicated managers and teams solely to work on their social strategy, and corporate goals and values are incorporating social work into their yearly targets.
But what is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and why is it so important for your business?
This article from Business News Daily covers all the nitty gritty of CSR, but essentially it is how a business shows their citizenship and how they affect change and impact of environmental and social issues. So how is your business impacting on your local community and area, and what are you doing to create a positive impact and change?
There's a huge range of things that every and all businesses can do in their part for CSR, ranging from environmental, ecological and ethical changes, volunteering, and philanthropy. These can be implemented across the entire business from CEO and Director, down to office staff and labourers.
But why do it? Why build a CSR strategy?
To begin with it's actually becoming the norm for businesses to build a CSR strategy, and although ordinarily you don't necessarily want to do what everyone else is doing in business, this in one example where you really should.
Corporate Social Responsibility is all about doing good. Being good. Having a positive impact. Making positive change. Supporting others. And that is very important for your business.
Every single business can benefit from good press. And CSR is a great measure in creating good press.
For example, you're a construction business, and you offer to rebuild a sensory garden in a Retirement Home. You implement Community Volunteering Days so your employees can go and complete the work in their normal working hours. The Retirement Home pay for the materials to be used. You work with your supply chain to have tools and equipment donated to the cause. You have a press release written and distributed. So does the Retirement Home. Not only have you created a positive change within the Retirement Home (your local community), you've created a positive atmosphere and working environment for your employees (now you have happier, more full-filled employees) and the local media outlets publish your story. Now the wider community learns that you've given back and affected positive change. And so does your local Authority, and potential clients (and clients love CSR).
So how does this benefit your business?
You remember those happier employees we just mentioned? Well a positive employee is not only going to work better and more effectively, but they're going to talk about their work. They're going to tell their family and friends about their day, how they made a difference, and word of mouth is a businesses best friend when it comes to marketing. And who doesn't want full-filled employees?
Also your strategy is integral for your business plan and client proposition. Clients are becoming more and more interested in their impact on the wider world, so want to ensure all businesses they deal with are on the same page as them. In fact, many local authorities include this within their BID guidelines.
Plus it's great for your company branding and awareness. Not muchelse is easier to get you good press than a solid CSR strategy, and consistent good press at that. A couple of press releases detailing your work and what you have planned is a sure fire way to increase your company awareness in the local community, and that goes a long way to creating a good work environment and promote more business.
